Mental Health & Wellbeing

Hummersea is a Headstart school which is an organisation which promotes children and young people’s emotional wellbeing in schools, at home, in the community and online. We work closely with Headstart and have created our own group of ‘Headstarters’ who are a team of pupils who have been specially trained to understand ways to maintain positive mental health and wellbeing and lead this across school. They have recently completed their silver award with Headstart South Tees and are now working on a project to developing a calm space for children to access within school with well being resources for children to access. In the summer term, they attended the Headstart conference alongside many other schools from across Redcar & Cleveland and Middlesbrough at Teesside University which they thoroughly enjoyed!

Mrs Marshall is our SENCO and our Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion at Hummersea Primary. she has completed the Senior Mental Health Leader training and works with Headstart and CAMHS at what we call our ‘Mental Health Huddles’ to discuss any mental health and wellbeing support needed for individual or groups of children within school.

As a school family, we recognise that to be able to learn and do well, we must have good mental health and be equipped with the strategies to help us if this is something we find difficult. Our curriculum promotes this constantly through our PSHE work, assemblies, visitors etc.
